Leonard Arthur Peel was born in Chatham, Kent on 24 September 1913 and enlisted in the Royal Air Force in January 1930. His subsequent pre-war appointments included service as an A.C. 1 in Iraq in 1934-37, latterly in No. 203 Squadron at Basrah, and as a Leading Aircraftsman in No. 20 Squadron in India in 1938. Back home, he was advanced to Corporal in February 1939 and was serving at R.A.F. Halton's school of technical training on the outbreak of hostilities.

Peel's subsequent wartime postings included employment at training establishments in Canada in 1941-42, where he was advanced to the temporary rank of Flight Sergeant, and appointments at R.A.F. Pembrey and R.A.F. Kemble in 1943-45.

Post-war, he was serving at R.A.F. Dishforth at the time of Operation 'Plainfare' - the Berlin airlift - and was likewise employed at the time of receiving his L.S. & G.C. Medal. Peel subsequently served in the 2nd Tactical Air Force in Germany in 1954-55, in No. 64 Squadron at R.A.F. Duxford in 1960-61, and on the strength of No. 205 Squadron at R.A.F. Changi in 1962-64. And he was awarded a Bar to his L.S. & G.C. Medal in January 1966, a relatively rare distinction on account of many pre-war enlisted men having been commissioned.

Peel was discharged as a Warrant Officer in June 1969 and died at Neath Abbey, Glamorganshire in June 1998; sold with copied service record.
