Catalogue of the Bridgewater House Collection of Coins and Commemorative Medals. Formed in the Eighteenth Century by the Earls of Bridgewater (lots 1-615).

"It is only rarely that the numismatist has the privilege of examining coins as fine as those offered for sale in this catalogue and this collection, originally formed at Bridgewater House, must certainly rank as one of the most important private collections of British Coins to be sold at auction. The Bridgewater House Collection has been seen by only a privileged few scholars and although it was placed in the British Museum for safekeeping by the first Earl of Ellesmere (1800-1857) whilst his house was being rebuilt, and remained there until 1900, the cabinet was not exhibited and has never been available for public examination since its inception....

The collection contains a wide range of pieces from Stephen to George III, but it is in the coinages of the Tudor and Stuart kings that it is particularly full. The coins of Scotland and Ireland are also strongly represented and among the most outstanding coins of the Irish "Pistole" pieces of 1646....

This highly important collection contains too many rarities in each of its sections to mention in this preface and, as none of the coins have ever been offered for public sale before, as much as possible has been illustrated in order that this catalogue may be of some value to the student."
